World
Cup 2006
It’s
hard to imagine that the next football World Cup is just over a year away.
With memories of the last one and England’s defeat by Brazil in the
quarter finals not such a distant memory for some of us, it’s time to turn
our thoughts once again to this greatest of competitions. And this time
it’s much nearer home – in Germany. With England currently at the top of
their group, automatic qualification seems highly likely. So if you’re
planning a trip to Germany to support our boys, you may want to
familiarise yourself with the language and the country.
Destination
Germany
Germany
is a vast country with a population of over 80 million and its bordering
countries include France, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria,
Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. Its diverse and
beautiful regions include the Rhine Valley, Germany’s East, the North and
Baltic Sea, Bavaria and the Black Forest where many of the stadium venues
are located – Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Leipzig to
name a few.
Renowned for its magnificent
mountains, rivers and castles you’ll be sure to want to see a few of the
sights in between games. Why not visit elegant Munich? (where the opening
match will be played). Famed for its distinctive copper onion-domed
towers, the Frauenkirche there is one of Germany’s biggest Gothic
cathedrals. You could take in King Ludwig’s fairytale castle of
Neuschwanstein (which features in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), or
take a trip down the magnificent Rhine, one of the longest rivers in
Europe. Of course you can’t miss the capital Berlin (where the final will
be held), with its historic monuments and lively nightlife. After all this
activity you’ll no doubt want to sample some of the excellent and
inexpensive regional beers and food!
Learning the Language
 And
to help you do all this? Well, there’s a whole range of excellent products
on the market, which are fun and easy to work with. They will help you to
learn the language, travel around, book your accommodation and order food
and drink. They will take you from complete beginner to a basic
understanding of the German language without the need to read or write a
single word. These CDs are designed for busy people who can't find time to
study, which means you can learn anywhere that you have access to a CD
player.
With
a bit of luck, England might even take home the coveted trophy and you can
celebrate with a few newly learnt German phrases. After all it’ll be 40
years since we last won it…
